National Novel Writing Month is November

We’re big fans of NaNoWriMo.  It’s great fun, produces something you can be proud of at the end (even if you don’t finish) and hones a skill we all use everyday.  We love it!  Even if it does force you to ignore your friends and family for a month.

So we really wanted to host some events — write-ins, some talks by local authors, that sort of thing.  But it’s not going to happen.  🙁

Our construction is coming along, but slowly.  We will definitely be open by the end of November (and maybe we could do a ‘final push’ party or something), but we won’t be ready by the First.

We will next year though, so look for those fun events in November of 2014!

We are currently finalizing our hundred some odd list of bottled beers to feature at the shop, and all we can think is–what pressure! While we have a pretty good notion of what’s required to have a balanced line-up, we still feel that our fans will ultimately drive what we serve. Any of you beer geeks out there have requests for specific breweries to be represented?

Feel free to share why you enjoy their brews so much! For example, San Diego’s Green Flash Brewing Co. whips up the West Coast IPA; an Indian Pale Ale that somehow comes off tasting balanced despite its burst of citrus and floral notes. Colorado’s Left Hand Brewing Company brews what is certain to become a new classic, the angelically smooth and chocolaty Milk Stout Nitro. So? Now it is your time to gush! Who knows, maybe your favorite beer will become a regular at your favorite gaming spot?

And while we are at it, is there any interest in growler fills?

In 1981, the summer between my 7th and 8th Grade years, I discovered roleplaying.  It was the D&D Blue Book (the Holmes edition) and the instant I started flipping through its pages I was hooked.

Back then, I lived in rural California and it was a six-hour drive to the nearest game store, so the couple of times a year that I’d get to go to one were always exciting.  I would wander the store for hours, often abandoned there by my family, and look at all the games that I had never seen before, getting strange looks from the employees.  The games were beautiful, strange and exotic; full of hope and promise.  It was like returning to a home that I had never actually visited.

So I guess it was no surprise that even though I wanted to write games when I grew up, what I actually wound up doing was working at game stores.  And it was only a matter of time before I went from working in a game store to owning one.

In 1992 I almost moved back to California to go into partnership on a store with one of my old gaming buddies, but there was no local work for my wife.  His game store, North Coast Roleplaying, is still thriving after all of these years.

In 1999, I had saved up nearly $12,000 and was seriously looking to open up a store near Everett High School.  But that summer, while working as guest liaison at a small Dallas convention, I had the opportunity to be sitting at dinner with Steve Jackson.  Of course, I asked him for some advice.  He said, and I’ll never forget these words, “The last thing the world needs is another under-funded game store.”

14 years later, here I am.  Partnered up with a brilliant and motivated beer expert to bring you ‘Round the Table.  Part game store, part bottle shop, part hangout.

And with more inventory than that entire startup budget from a decade before.

‘Round the Table is a new shop coming to the Lynnwood-Edmonds area of North Seattle.  At its core is a Game store – board games, card games, roleplaying games, jigsaw puzzles – that combines a beer bottle shop with hundreds of different brews from local and specialty breweries.

But it’s more than that.  It’s a gathering place, a community, a fun place to hang out, have a drink or play a game.  There’s a private room for games or events.  And it’s coming soon …
