Sunday: Medieval Games @ 1pm; Pokemon Gym Day @ 2pm; M15 Pre-Release @ 2pm; Deck-Building Games @ 2:30pm; Story Games (The Quiet Year) @ 6pm; Iron Kingdoms @ 7pm.

Phew! It’s a busy weekend here at ‘Round the Table.

Besides the Magic 2015 Pre-Release tournaments going on all weekend we’ve got quite a few other exciting events going on.

Our friend Lynn is hosting Medieval Game Day tomorrow at 1pm. She’ll bring a teach a wide variety of games played throughout the world … before the 16th Century. Games like: 9 Man Morris, Fox and Geese, Chasing the Girls, Tabula, The Game of the Goose, Backgammon, Mancala, Naftafl and many more! Hopefully we’ll make this a monthly event.

We’ve got our second episode of Pokemon Gym Day. Will Ash make it to Viridain City? Meet other players of this great Trading Card Game. Talk strategy. Trade cards. Make friends. Catch them all!

Like Resident Evil? Join Bethany for that and other Deck Building games Sunday at 2:30pm.

Despite all of the Magic, we do still have table space open, and should most of the day, so don’t let that keep you away. And remember, we have A/C!

What’s Happening?

Today: Magic Packmaster League @ 3pm($5); Friday Night Magic Draft @ 7pm.

Tomorrow: Magic Core 15 Pre-Release Tournaments @ 12pm & 7pm; Magic Homeroom @ 2pm; Pathfinder Society @ 6pm.

It’s time for our obligatory Magic: The Gathering Pre-release reminder! Normally these sorts of events throw a wrench into our Saturday Pathfinder Society games but we’re making sure to save at least one large table tomorrow despite the craziness…so…you’re welcome.

Back to Magic! We are hosting three sets of sealed tournaments this weekend for this new release, and each $25 entry includes a Pre-Release pack that contains, among other goodies, 5 “Core 15” booster packs and a special seeded promo pack for whichever color you choose, plus 2 extra booster packs just for participating. PLUS prizes if you rank highly in the tournaments. That’s at least 8 booster packs for $25. Seriously, just come and play already! Pre-registering below gives you priority over the chumps who walk in for choosing your color. Walk-ins are welcome, but if you do want to pre-order online…

What’s Happening?

Today: Beer Tasting from 6-8pm; Scrabble @ 7:00pm

Wednesday: Riichi Mahjong @ 2pm; D&D Encounters: Dead in Thay @ 6pm; Netrunner League @ 7pm.

Tim posting today: We usually talk about beer on Tuesdays, but I’m doing the typing and I’m too excited about some of the great new stuff we just got in from some indie RPG publishers, so I’m hijacking Facebook and Twitter!

(Yes, we’ll still be beer tasting tonight, so please come on by and help us help out the Lynnwood Food Bank. And have some beer.)

I have some re-stocks: Microscope is back in, as is The Quiet Year (which we’ll be playing on Story Game Night on July 13th), Shab-Al-Hiri Roach, and Noteboards, the pocket-sized battlemats.

But we got in Blood Red Sands, a game where Sword & Sorcery meets heavy-metal album covers and players compete to create scenes and characters. Here’s a bit from the back cover:

“Enter a savage and brutal world of dark sorcery, a world where the five Witch Kings of Abalahn slew the very gods and have reigned for a thousand years. Blood Red Sands is a game of competitive role-playing, where powerful heroes confront the terrible might of one of these the Witch Kings and their dark servants. ”

We also got How I Came to Live Here, a story game by Brennan Taylor that explores the myths and legends of the Native American people. You play characters that must negotiate between their own ambitions and desires, and the conflicting demands of their fellow villagers. Plus, there’s the threat of monsters and natural disasters. Will your ambitions lead you down the path of corruption?

And we got one that I ordered just as a whim, sight unseen. It’s called the Seattle Doomsday Map, and it’s a map of downtown Seattle, after the apocalypse. So there’s a cruise ship crashed into the waterfront, toppled buildings, and large expanses of wild vegetation. I comes with a guidebook and is pretty damned cool. There’s a link to more info in the comments.

Lastly, we FINALLY got in one of my absolute favorite games, Hillfolk, by Robin Laws. It’s been out since last fall, and the only reasons we haven’t had before now are stupid administrative ones from both me and the supplier, but it’s here now and that’s all that matters.

Hillfolk is the flagship setting for the DramaSystem, a semi-traditional RPG that tries to inspire the interpersonal conflict of our favorite TV dramas like House, Breaking Bad or the Sopranos. There’s also a supplement for it, Blood in the Snow, which is a collection of “series pitches” — settings and scenarios — for DramaSystem. Eventually we’ll get around to running a game of that around here.

Lots going on today: Monday: 1st Edition D&D with Ron @ 6pm; Euro Game Night @ 6pm; Lynnwood Magic MeetUp @ 6:30pm.

Tuesday: Beer Tasting from 6-8pm; Scrabble @ 7:00pm

Today’s hot news is Dungeons and Dragons! We’ll have it on Thursday, nearly 2 weeks before its official release date!

Tim got to see copies of it last week at an industry gaming conference and it looks really beautiful! You can see it too, here: http://www.twitch.tv/wotc_dnd/c/4523741

And we’re offering a special deal: Get a free copy, yes a free copy, by pre-ordering the 3 core books that are coming out over the next few months.

You know you’re going to be buying the Player’s Handbook, Monster Manual and Dungeon Master’s Guide anyway, so order now and get the Starter Set (a $19.99 value) free! In addition, by pre-ordering, you’ll get the core books for 10% off!

But if you want to hold off on buying the core books, we’ll have Starter Sets for sale too, at 11:00am on Thursday morning.

What’s Happening?

Today: Cider Tasting from 6-8pm (Yep! This week’s beer tasting is actually cider, give some grown-up apple juice a try!); Catanamanics @ 7:30pm

Wednesday: Riichi Mahjong @ 2pm; D&D Encounters: Dead in Thay @ 6pm; Netrunner League @ 7pm.

What’s Catanamaniacs? Join us for Settlers of Catan, the breakout 1995 game that changed the way the world looked at boardgames. We’re going to start playing every other Tuesday! New to the game? Looking to learn? We’ll teach in a friendly setting. Road-building master? Share your love for the game with us! We’re looking to grow a regular group and have quarterly tournaments!

But what’s really exciting this week is all of the New Releases, including Wave 4 X-Wing! E-Wings. Z-95 Headhunters. TIE Defenders. TIE Phantoms. They’re finally here! And a restock of Imperial Aces as well!

But we got in other things too! A game called 8-Minute Empire that we’d never seen, but looks so neat that we’ll be breaking it open today to give it a try. The Command Tower Deck Box for Magic is beautiful. The Game of Thrones, Westeros Intrigue Card Game by Reiner Knizia (not the LCG) looks very cool too!

And we’ll have restocks of Alien Frontiers, Microscope and The Quiet Year later this week!

So many games!

What’s Happening?

Friday: Conspiracy Draft @ 5pm; FNM Theros Block Draft @ 7pm; Conspiracy Draft @ 8pm.

Saturday: Free RPG Day all day with box openings at 11am, 3pm & 7pm; Magic Homeroom @ 2pm; Pathfinder Society @ 6pm; Magic Pauper Tournament @ 6:30pm. Conspiracy Drafts at 2pm & 7pm and throughout the day.

And Sunday, this Sunday, the 22nd of June, marks the anniversary of a pivotal event in gaming history, an event so monumental that we had to celebrate it by devoting an entire day to classic RPGs. What happened on that day, long ago in 1993?

It was the release day of , the DOS-based video game!

OK, ok. We may be going a little overboard here. The game wasn’t spectacular and neither Nick or I can say that we played it or that it changed our lives. But it does have a connection to the beginning of pen-and-paper roleplaying game history, and that is what we want to celebrate on Sunday.

Betrayal At Krondor is based on the series of novels written by Raymond E. Feist, set in the world of Midkemia. Well, the books are based on a D&D game that Feist played in the late 1970s while he worked for … wait for it … Midkemia Press.

Midkemia Press publisehd some truely wonderful and ground-breaking products, books that are still on my shelf and that I still use while gaming. Cities (1979) talked about designing and creating cities in fantasy campaigns. Carse (1980) was a fully-detailed fantasy city, based on Caernarfon in Wales with a beautiful map. Tulan of the Isles (1981) is a fantasy village and the surrounding countryside, with a sinister plot weaving through the place descriptions.

And so, in honor of all this history, we’re devoting Sunday, June 22nd to Old School RPGs. We’ve got our buddy Rich running a 2e D&D game at 2pm, for old hands and for newcomers to the game. All of our new and used Old School RPGs will be 10% off the marked price and we’ll break out some other older games. Anyone up for Dungeon?

What’s Happening? 6/18/14

Today: Riichi Mahjong @ 2pm; D&D Encounters: Dead in Thay @ 6pm; Netrunner League @ 7pm.
Thursday: X-Wing League @ 7pm.

This Saturday we’ll be host to Free RPG Day, a celebration of role-playing games in all their many forms! We’ll be giving away free starter books for RPGs like the retro-scifi Cosmic Patrol, super hero Valiant, cyberpunk Shadowrun, among a number of other indie games. For those who are Role-Playing veterans looking for something for their favorite game already, we’ll have free adventure modules for PathfinderCastles & Crusades, and 13th Age. Of course some of the coolest free items we’ve saved for last, like a Meeple dice tower, dry-erase battle map, commemorative dice and an expansion for the Pathfinder Adventure Card Game.

In the past the mob that arrives in the first hour usually takes everything fun, so instead we got a couple boxes of Free RPG Day stuff and will be staggering opening them throughout the day so that EVERYONE can get something they want.

Following up on the Saturday festivities, Sunday will be an impromptu ‘Old School RPG’ Day! Not only are all of our old-school D&D books 15% off, but we have a GM lined up to run a 2nd Edition AD&D one-off adventure from 2-7pm with pre-generated characters. If you reminisce about slaying dragons in the late 80s and 90s, you owe it to yourself to join in on the fun Spots are limited, so if you are interested let us know so we can get you signed up!

What’s Happening?

Today: Ron’s 1st Ed AD&D @ 6pm; EuroGame Night @ 6pm (Terra Mystica and others!); Lynnwood Magic MeetUp @ 6:30pm.

Tomorrow: Beer Tasting from 6-8pm; Scrabble 7pm.

New Releases! Lots of them! We got a bunch of new stuff in today and we’re pretty excited!

Sentinels of the Multiverse: Vengeance isn’t new, but it has been out of print for the last month or two, so it’s nice to have it back.

From the same company, Greater Than Games, we got in their brand new game, Galactic Strike Force. It’s a deck-building game with a twist — Rather than having individual turns, each player is constantly acting through the phases of the game, so no one is ever sitting around bored.

We also got in Expedition: Northwest Passage. Explore the frozen wastes by sled and ship, but watch the weather because the ice will block your ships and no one wants to be on the ice when it melts.

And there’s Pagoda, by Alderac Entertainment. Players physically build their pagodas with wooden columns and cards in this clever 2-player game.

Coming tomorrow, we’ll have the new edition of the classic Dungeon boardgame and on Wednesday we’ll get the new Ascension deck-building game set!
