They’ll be for sale on Tuesday. ‘Magic Homeroom’ is also around 2pm, for new or younger players wanting to learn the rules or play in a very casual environment.

The big push to sort through the 70,000+ single magic cards we have has begun! We put a bunch online yesterday — check out the full list here: http://store.tcgplayer.com/sellerfeedback/104afe3e All of these are available for in-store purchase and well as online.

We’ll be sorting more and adding to the list over the next few weeks. We’re also looking for volunteers to help sort the cards, so if you’ve got the inclination, let us know.

We’ll be closing this chapter tomorrow with two $5 Standard tournaments and the Defeat a God challenge, where you can face off against a self-playing diety. If you aren’t sure your deck is ready for the tournaments tomorrow, drop by for our Friday Night Magic booster draft tonight at 7:00pm and grab yourself some extra firepower! Entry is a flat $15 and nets you a total of 5 booster packs just for participating. The winner gets a little something extra, of course.

Don’t know the first thing about deck building? Tomorrow at 2pm we are continuing our ‘Magic Homeroom’ series, designed to help ease new or younger players into the game in a more casual, friendly environment. If you aren’t in the mood for casual though, the Journey to Nyx Event deck “Wrath of the Mortals” has been released. This super charged and competitive Red/Blue deck is tournament-ready and packed with great synergy, not to mention 10 rares and a boat load of burn spells.

See you tonight!

Big news for you fans of Dungeons and Dragons fans today!

Wizards of the Coast didn’t make any big announcements about this, but the following items have shown up on their Upcoming Products website:http://www.wizards.com/dnd/catalog.aspx?sort=date-desc

Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set (Boxed Set), July 15
Icons of the Realms Starter Set (Minis), July 15
Icons of the Realms Booster Set (Minis), August 19
Hoard of the Dragon Queen (Adventure), August 19
D&D Player’s Handbook (320 page Core Book), August 19
Monster Manual (320 page Core Book), September 30
The Rise of Tiamat (Adventure), October 21
Dungeon Master’s Guide (320 page Core Book), November 18

It looks like we get the Intro Boxed Set early, the PH at GenCon followed only 4 weeks later by the Monster Manual and the DMG around Thanksgiving.

I really like this release order over the classic PH, DMG, MM. The Monster Manual is so much more needed for play than the DMG.

We’ll get pre-order links up on our website in the next day or two.

And for all of you Ascension players, we got in a box of the Theme Packs. We know we’re not a video game shop, or even an internet cafe but each of us plays video games. Plus, we’re not just about what we sell. We love out of print games, computer games, comic books and all of that cool stuff. So, with that in mind, we’re going to try something a little different:

On Sunday at Noon, we’re hosting a Hearthstone Fireside Gathering. Hearthstone is an online card game, set in the Warcraft universe. It runs on nearly all portable computers and tablets. It’s great fun and a lot of people have been using our wifi to play it.

A Fireside Gathering is essentially a meetup of fans of the game where they can talk strategy and play each other. But they also offer special achievements/in-game rewards for groups of people playing each other in the same space, so there’s a good reason to come down here and play rather than stay at home.

So come on over and join us on Sunday and make your computer gaming a social occasion!

What’s Happening:

Tonight: D&D Encounters @ 6:00pm; Android: Netrunner @ 7:00pm. Now, due to popular demand, we have Netrunner singles!
Thursday: X-Wing Miniatures League @ 7:00pm.

The great thing about selling Used Games is that sometimes the shop feels like we’re on the set of Pawn Stars. In the words of Rick Harrison, “you never know what is gonna come through that door.” Fortunately for you, you’ll know exactly what is inside each game since we hand-count everything before we shrink wrap it. So here is the random stuff that came through our doors over the past week and what we sell it for:

– The Walking Dead: The Board Game, $19.99 (MSRP $39.99 OOP)
– Eminent Domain, $19.99 (MSRP $39.99)
– Gloom, $9.99 (MSRP $24.99)
– Resident Evil Deck Building Game, $24.99 (MSRP $29.99 OOP)
– Krosmaster Arena, $49.99 (MSRP $79.99)
– Chaostle, $24.99 (MSRP $69.99)
– Escape, $34.99 (MSRP $54.99)
– Ladies & Gentleman, $24.99 (MSRP $39.99)
– Small World: Underground, $34.99 (MSRP $49.99)

What’s Happening at ‘Round the Table?
Tonight: Beer Tasting from 6:00pm – 8:00pm (Oregon breweries this week); Scrabble @ 7:00pm.
Tomorrow: D&D Encounters @ 6:00pm; Android: Netrunner @ 7:00pm. Now, due to popular demand, we have Netrunner singles!

Nick and I (Tim) both love games, but we don’t really agree on what our favorites are. Oh sure, we like a lot of the same games and play them together, but when it comes to our Top 10 lists, I think there’s only one game that would be on both of them. (Maybe next week, we’ll post those lists.)

And that game is Imperial, by Mac Gerdts. Imperial really wants to be wargame, and at a casual glance looks a lot like Diplomacy — same setting, big map of 1900s Europe, army, fleet and production center counters, no dice. Anyone would be forgiven for thinking it was an updated version of the great old classic.

But it’s not, because it’s really an investment game. The players take on the roles of multi-national bankers and financiers who buy “stock” (that is, bribe, manipulate, and otherwise subtly control) in the various countries of Europe and send them to war with one another in order to make themselves wealthier. The winner is the player with the most money at the end of the game.

Since the players do not own a country (control of the country’s actions goes to the player with the most stock) the game creates a brilliant tableaux of shifting alliances as players control multiple countries and vie to take control of their opponents’ nations.

Thrown into this too is Mr, Gerdts’ favorite design element, the Rondel, a list of all the different actions that a player can do during a turn, laid out in a circular pie-chart. A counter for each player shows what action he or she performed last turn. On their turn, players may move the counter only so many spaces (or spend money to move additional spaces) so not all actions are available at all times. A clever system, and I feel like this game utilizes the Rondel the best out of all of his games.

The game has a lot going on, but I never feel overwhelmed by all of it. The game is essentially a race game, but since money is goal and how much each player has is a secret, you never feel out of the race. The game has such a strong narrative quality, I almost feel like I’m reading a historical account as I play.

We played a game last Friday night and have an open store copy if anyone wants to give it a try.

Imperial

What’s Happening?
Tonight: Lynnwood Magic Meetup @ 6:30pm; EuroGame Night (Canterbury and more!) 7:00pm
Tuesday: Beer Tasting from 6:00pm to 8:00pm; Scrabble Night @ 7:00pm

So many new things!

Friday was the release of the new Magic: The Gathering set, Journey Into Nyx, so we have a lot of that in stock — Booster Packs, Intro Decks and Fat Packs.

The re-print of Lords of Waterdeep is finally out and we have it! This is a light, Euro-style, worker-placement set in the D&D city of Waterdeep. Recruit fighters, wizards, rogues and clerics to adventure and build across this iconic city. We also have the expansion, Scoundrels of Skullport!

The new stand-alone expansion for Thunderstone Advance, Worlds Collide, came in last week, and we still have a few left. This one has a lot of re-prints in it, including some hard-to-find promos.

Coconuts is a hilarious game that we’ve been playing every day since we got it in! With your monkey catapults, you launch rubber coconuts into to air to try and capture baskets from the board or the other players. First monkey to 6 baskets is the winner!

Netrunner continues to go strong over here, with our Wednesday Night league (new one starting soon!) and a full draft in the works, tentatively scheduled for Sunday, May 25th (Let us know if that does or doesn’t work for you). We got nearly a full restock of data packs, including the new one, Honor & Profit.

And finally, we got in the the new Star Wars: Age of Rebellion RG Boxed Set. This box contains everything you need to learn the game and play! Now you can join the Rebel Alliance and fight the Empire.

What’s happening: EuroGames tonight @ 7:00pm
Beer Tasting (California Beers) Tuesday @ 6:00pm
Netrunner League Wednesday @ 7:00pm

Here it is, Mammoth Monday again. Since this week we decided to talk about war games, today we’ll take a look at some of the classics that we have here at Round the Table.

Tactics (we have the revision, Tactics II) is often considered the first wargame. It was designed by Charles S. Roberts and was the first game published by The Avalon Hill Game Company, way back in 1954.

Avalon Hill went on to make dozens (if not hundreds!) of other games, mostly concentrating on World War II, but still get in some ancients, some American Civil War, WWI, fantasy and science fiction. They are probably best known for their monster WWII tactical game, Advanced Squad Leader, which has been licensed out to Multi-Man Publishing. Other AH games that are still in print include Merchants of Venus, Acquire (remember last week?), and Diplomacy.

Other early wargame publishers include Yaquinto, who were known for packaging their games in album sleeves (you know, the protective cardboard envelope that a vinyl record went in). Games like Swashbuckler and its sci-fi cousin Adventurer still get great reviews. Simulations Publications, Inc. (or SPI) was the other giant in early wargaming, known for their large counter trays and box-less packaging. They did many fantasy titles, including Sorcerer and War of the Ring.

Back in the early days of game publishing, many companies that we think of now as specializing in RPGs, did wargames too. Steve Jackson (and Steve Jackson Games) designed Ogre, GEV and Battlesuit. Chaosium (who now does exclusively Call of Cthulhu and BRP) produced Panzer Pranks. Game Designers Workshop did a bunch of wargames including the still highly-acclaimed Triplanetary. And TSR started out with wargames like Chainmail and Star Probe before Dungeons and Dragons.
